What Is a Paddle Wheel Flow Meter?

A paddle wheel flow meter is an in-line flow meter that measures the flow of liquid through a pipe using a rotating paddle wheel. Its compact display, totalizer function, 4–20 mA output, and RS-485 Modbus communication make it suitable for water and general-purpose liquid flow measurement applications.

Paddle wheel flow meters measure flow using paddles that rotate as the fluid passes through the pipe. The rotational speed of the paddle wheel is proportional to the flow rate. Suitable for measuring low-viscosity liquids such as water, oil, and chemicals, these flow meters offer moderate accuracy, fast response, easy installation, and straightforward maintenance. Because the sensor comes into direct contact with the liquid, periodic cleaning may be required when used with certain fluids.

Bidirectional Flow Measurement

AxelSense’s patented flow measurement technology detects the direction of paddle wheel rotation, enabling bidirectional flow measurement. This distinguishes it from conventional paddle wheel flow meters from other brands that use Hall effect sensors capable of detecting rotation but unable to determine its direction. The technology also provides flow direction information and calculates positive, negative, and net flow, meeting a wide range of flow measurement requirements.
